Hi All

We have had such a busy week! What with resistance screens and normal wormcount tests we are busier than we would ever have hoped at this time of the year. The worrying thing is that we are getting some quite high wormcount results from horses and ponies that have been recently wormed with Equest Pramox or Panacur Equine Guard 5 day. The main reasons seem to be underworming. Owners seem to think that one tube or bottle will do regardless of the size of their horse which is fine if the horse is under 575kg!  The trouble is that a lot of horses of 16hh and over are well over that weight and simply using a weigh tape is not enough.  Most tapes underweigh by up to 50kg so it is always a good idea to add this much to your calculation unless you are completely confident that your weigh tape is accurate.  The only real way to do this is to put your horse on a weigh bridge or platform then put the tape on him.  If the result is the same then bingo! If not then add the difference (assuming it is under, which it usually is!) Underworming is a serious problem especially if your horse has some resistant worms as you will simply be killing the weak worms and leaving the strong ones to flourish in the horses’ gut.

We are often asked if there is a possibility of overworming.  Of course there is for the same reasons as above however, most wormers have safety factors built in so that if you do accidentally overworm your horse then you should be within the tolerance. If you want more information on this problem then give us a call and we will discuss it further with you in person.

Snow has been a problem for a lot of people this week, in fact we have had our first snow since last March here in Northampton.  It has been so pretty and handily fell over the weekend so hopefully it should all be gone by Monday!  This will be good for a mobile laboratory as, like the pony express, we always try to get through!

Well, that is all for now.  Have a great week, build some snowmen and take a short break from poo picking!  Don’t forget to start again though as soon as the snow melts.  Worms don’t take a break.

Bye for now
