14 April Blog - Grand National Day

posted 14 Apr 2012, 05:56 by Abacus Equine Lab

Hi All

I’m writing this blog this week whilst watching Clare Balding going through the runners for the Grand National.  The amazingly brave horses and jockeys look fantastic.  Let’s pray that all get round and come home safely.

We’ve had another brilliant week worm counting.  Of course it is a very busy time of the year as many people, who only worm count once a year, are having us out to test their horses now, as well as all our other regular, three-monthly clients. Worryingly there have been a lot of very high counts returned so far.  The unusually dry, warm weather, followed by rain and then more rain, mean perfect conditions for our wormy friends.

The concerning thing is that many of these horses have been wormed with a variety of wormers between October and December.  We are keeping a very close eye on these horses to make sure that there are no resistance problems occurring.  We think there could be an underworming issue on some yards but not all.

Well, just before the big race I’m off to bring my little pony in – much to his annoyance as he thinks that four hours a day grazing is far too little however, his laminitic feet will tell you otherwise! The fun is trying to catch him whilst dodging the lambs who seem to be on helium and bound about under your nose just at the wrong time! Hey ho, the joys of Spring!

Bye for now
